![]() DromedariesTraveling by car from Aswan to Abu Simbel, in Upper (southern) Egypt, we passed a bunch of camels having a rest. This photo was taken in 1993 with a Nikon FG. | ![]() Goats on a DoorstepMy memory is somewhat hazy, but I believe this photo was taken in Cape Coast, Ghana, in 1997. I thought the door was beautiful and the relaxing goats were cute. This image was taken with a Nikon FG. | ![]() Parrots of Telegraph HillSan Francisco (and several other cities in the US) have flocks of wild parrots. These parrots are either escapees from captivity or the offspring of escaped birds. In San Francisco, the parrots were first noticed around Telegraph Hill, in the North Beach neighborhood. Eventually, in 2003, a documentary film was made about them. Later, other flocks appeared in other parts of the city. The birds in this photo are from the Telegraph Hill flock. They are mostly tame. |

![]() Water Buffalo on the MoveWalking around Varanasi, India is pretty much guaranteed to present more photo opportunities than you could possibly take advantage of. On the ghats (the stepped terraces leading down to the bank of the Ganges) myriad scenes of life in India are on display - from people bathing and doing laundry, to children flying kites and playing cricket, to religious observances and cremations of the recently deceased. These water buffalo were being taken to the river to have a bath. | ![]() Macaques, Mother and ChildAnyone who has been to India is familiar with the rhesus macaque, the most ubiquitous of India's monkey species. I saw this mother and child sitting in a small Hindu shrine at the base of the Mahakal Mandir in Darjeeling. | ![]() Lizard on a Burnt TreeIn the summer of 2008, large parts of the Ventana Wilderness, including the area around Tassajara, were burnt in a major forest fire. The fire actually passed right through Tassajara, but because of extensive preparations, and because five monks (including Zen Center's late abbot Steve Stuecky) stayed behind to man the hoses, significant damage to Tassajara's buildings was prevented. The following summer, I took this image of a lizard on the burnt trunk of a dead tree. |
![]() Tiger SwallowtailThis photo doesn't really need an explanation. It was taken in the Ventana Wilderness in late spring. | ![]() Pigeons Outside the WindowThis image was taken from the window of my hotel room in Calcutta. A narrow alley separated the hotel from this teal-colored building next door. This pigeon couple were roosting just a few feet from my window, and their cooing and flapping wings were the dominant sound. Although their little shelf is covered with pigeon droppings, and although pigeons are ubiquitous throughout the cities of the world (and are even something of a nuisance), I grew attached to this particular pair. |
