Green Gulch is part of the San Francisco Zen Center. |

![]() Eucalyptus in PacificaThis photo was taken in San Pedro Valley Park, in Pacifica, California. Pacifica is a town on the coast, just south of San Francisco. Eucalyptus is one of the trees that I most strongly identify with northern California, though they are not native to the state. | ![]() Mystic forest at PurisimaPurisima Creek Redwoods Preserve is a park in San Mateo County, south of San Francisco. | ![]() Death Valley DunesSometime in the late 1990s, a friend and I did a road-trip to Death Valley. This photo was taken with a Nikon FG. |
![]() Death Valley Rock FormationsTaken with a Nikon FG. The B&W negative was later scanned. | ![]() Death Valley VistaTaken with a Nikon FG. The B&W negative was later scanned. | ![]() Forest Light with SequoiaThis photo was taken on a trip to Sequoia National Park in 2009. |
![]() SequoiaThis photo was taken on a trip to Sequoia National Park in 2009. These amazing trees are notoriously difficult to photograph. | ![]() CasamanceIn late 1996 / early 1997, I visited a friend who was a Peace Corps volunteer in Senegal, West Africa. Casamance is the region of Senegal that lies near the coast in the south of the country. It has a more tropical climate than the rest of Senegal, which is mostly arid. This photo was taken with a Nikon FG, the negative later scanned. | ![]() Slave Fortress, Cape Coast, GhanaOn the southern coast of West Africa, in Ghana, there is this ruined fortress, built by slave-traders. I visited the part of Africa in 1997. This photo was taken with a Nikon FG. |
![]() Ghana CoastThis photo was taken in 1997, on the coast of Ghana. I do not remember the name of the town. | ![]() View from Leh FortressIn the summer of 1999, I visited Ladakh, a Tibetan Buddhist region in the far north of India, as part of my work for the International Society for Ecology & Culture (now known as the Local Futures Network). This view is from the fortress in Leh, the capital of Ladakh. The fortress sits on a high promontory above the market and town center. If I remember correctly, this is Leh valley, looking north towards the villages of Yurtung and Gonpa. | ![]() AbagonAbagon is the name of the house I lived in when I was in Ladakh, in the summer of 1999. This photo was taken with a Nikon FG. |
![]() Rizong Monastery, LadakhDuring my stay in Ladakh, a few colleagues and I did a four-day village trek. On the way to the starting place for our trek, we passed this monastery, perched on a cliff. I believe it is Rizong monastery (but I may be mistaken). | ![]() Ladakh Mountains & ChildDuring our trek, we passed this young child standing in a field. | ![]() Ladakh FarmhouseOn the same village trek, looking down on a Ladakhi farm. Notice the harvested barley arranged in neat rows. |
![]() TemisgangLooking down on Temisgang village in Ladakh, in 1999. The landscape of Ladakh is mostly dry and treeless (Ladakh is technically a high-altitude desert), but wherever there are villages, there are plenty of trees. | ![]() Hillside Farms in SikkimSikkim is a Himalayan province of India, which I visited in 2011. On a hike near Yuksom (the old capital of the kingdom of Sikkim), I saw this hill, covered with farmhouses and gardens. | ![]() Kids in the Niranjana RiverThe Niranjana flows near Bodhgaya, in Bihar State, India. During the monsoon, the Niranjana is very wide. But during the rest of the year, it is a narrow, shallow stream of water flowing through a sandy river bed. These kids probably live in one of the nearby villages. |
![]() Crossing the FalguThe Falgu (or Phalgu) River, which is also called the Niranjana, is the river that flows past Bodhgaya. This bridge crosses to a village that is known as "Sujata's village." Sujata is the young girl who offered the starving Siddhartha some rice milk. After accepting this offering, and thereby recovering his strength, he then took his seat under the bodhi tree, determined to not rise until he had "clarified the Great Matter." A large stupa was built in the village during the Gupta Dynasty. | ![]() EvergladesAnyone who has been to south Florida is familiar with the amazing cloud formations that characterize the skies over the Everglades. This photo was taken in Everglades National Park, at the very southern tip of Florida, near where the "River of Grass" meets the ocean. | ![]() South Island, New ZealandIn 2003, I visited a couple of friends, who were then living in New Zealand. The South Island of New Zealand is particularly beautiful (and provided many of the settings for the film, "Lord of the Rings". I'm not sure which lake this is. |
